What percentage does eBay take in Australia?

eBay Australia applies a Final Fee Value Fee (FVF) on the whole sale value including the item’s selling price, shipping costs, and relevant taxes. For most categories, the fees are as follows:

  • AU\$4,000, the fee is 13.4% of the total *
  • Amount above AU\$4,000 will be charged at 2.5%.
  • There is a fixed fee of $0.30 per order

There is a cap of AU\$440 for items without store seller and AU\$400 for store subscribed sellers for FVF per item.

While eBay Australia grants 250 free listings monthly, they still incur Final Value Fees when items are sold. To minimize costs, it is advisable to:

  • Exploit the free monthly listings.
  • Get an eBay Store subscription for lower FVFs.
  • Retain the Top Rated Seller status to access discounts.

Notice: eBay Australia differs from other regions in not providing zero-cost selling options for individual sellers.

In the case of eBay Australia, the platform can be of great worth to sellers as it opens up a huge market. In saying that, profit depends on the type of items being sold, the pricing strategy adopted, and how fees are handled. Some sellers do voice complaints around escalated fees and competition for low-margin items.

The standard FVF is, as stated above, 13.4% of the first AU\$4,000 and then 2.5% of any amount higher than that plus a AU\$0.30 per order fee. Some other charges can be added:

  • 5.5% surcharge if the seller does not meet the performance standards.

  • 1.1% international charge for delivery outside of Australia.

For eBay Australia, it is not entirely free because even though they do not charge for listing up to 250 items a month, there are Final Value Fees applicable after sales. The fees need to be included in listings because they impact profit margins, but balance selling options, attracting customers, and remaining competitive.
